Modi’s Israel Visit Criticized as US-Israel Strike Iran
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing significant criticism from opposition parties following his recent state visit to Israel. Just two days after Modi affirmed India’s support for Israel during his address to the Knesset, the United States and Israel conducted extensive missile and airstrikes on Iran. This timing has prompted sharp rebukes regarding India’s foreign policy and its stance on regional conflicts.
The airstrikes, which occurred on October 9, 2023, have escalated tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns among various political factions in India. Opposition leader Jairam Ramesh described Modi’s visit as an act of “highest moral cowardice.” He emphasized that the Prime Minister’s decision to travel to Israel while military actions were being planned against Iran reflects poorly on India’s diplomatic integrity.
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also voiced his concerns, urging the Indian government to place the safety of Indian citizens living in the Middle East as a priority. His comments echo a broader anxiety about how such international relations might impact Indian nationals working in conflict-prone areas.
In addition to Ramesh and Gandhi, Asaduddin Owaisi, a prominent political figure, questioned the implications of the visit for India’s foreign policy. Owaisi raised alarms about the potential loss of India’s impartiality in the region, suggesting that Modi’s visit may have compromised India’s long-standing position of neutrality.
The strikes on Iran, described as retaliatory measures against perceived threats, have drawn global attention and condemnation. Critics argue that India’s support for Israel, especially following Modi’s visit, could further entangle the nation in international disputes that conflict with its historical principles of non-alignment.
As tensions rise, the political landscape in India appears increasingly divided over the government’s approach to foreign affairs. The opposition’s criticism highlights a growing concern about the implications of aligning closely with Western powers in a complex geopolitical environment.
Looking ahead, how the government navigates its diplomatic relations with both Israel and Iran will likely be closely monitored, especially as the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve.
