Political Landscape Shifts After Ajit Pawar’s Sudden Passing
The political climate in Maharashtra is experiencing significant upheaval following the unexpected death of Ajit Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). His passing came on October 18, 2023, when a chartered plane tragically crashed in Baramati, located in Pune district. Ajit Pawar’s death has sparked discussions about potential successors within the party and the state government.
Senior NCP leader and Maharashtra FDA minister Narhari Zirwal has suggested that the public is in favor of bringing in Sunetra Pawar, Ajit Pawar’s wife, into the state ministry. Currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, Sunetra Pawar could be appointed as a minister, a move that Zirwal believes aligns with the desires of the constituents. He noted, “People want ‘vahini’ (sister-in-law, referring to Sunetra Pawar) to be included in the ministry.”
Zirwal, who is among Ajit Pawar’s close allies, expressed a commitment to discussing this potential appointment with the party leadership. He remarked, “We will talk to the leadership about it and take a decision,” as reported by Press Trust of India (PTI). Furthermore, when addressing the possibility of merging the two factions of the NCP, Zirwal stated, “The two factions are already together. Everyone has realised that there is no point in remaining scattered and that they have to be together.”
Ajit Pawar’s Last Rites and Political Implications
Ajit Pawar was cremated with full state honors on October 19, 2023, at Baramati. His funeral was attended by several prominent political figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Among those present were Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with family members including his wife, Sunetra, and sons, Parth and Jay Pawar.
As Pawar’s remains, draped in the national flag, were transported from his native Katewadi village to the funeral site, thousands of supporters gathered to pay their respects, chanting “Ajit Dada amar rahe,” which translates to “Long live Ajit Dada.” His death marks a significant moment for the NCP, which is a key component of the ruling Mahayuti alliance alongside the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
In a notable political shift, Ajit Pawar had joined the Eknath Shinde-led government in July 2023, a decision that resulted in a split within the NCP, originally founded by his uncle, Sharad Pawar. As discussions regarding the party’s future and leadership ensue, the impact of Ajit Pawar’s legacy on Maharashtra’s political landscape will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
The coming days will reveal how the NCP navigates this transition and whether Sunetra Pawar will emerge as a significant player in the state ministry.
