O. Panneerselvam Joins DMK, Marking Major Shift in Tamil Politics

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu underwent a significant shift on February 27, 2024, as former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, commonly referred to as OPS, announced his decision to join the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). This development came just days after V.K. Sasikala, another prominent figure in the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), publicly criticized the party’s current leadership under Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

Sasikala, who had remained silent for over five years following her imprisonment, delivered a lengthy speech on February 24, accusing Palaniswami of betrayal and expressing her intention to be active in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. Although she is unable to contest elections until 2027 due to her conviction, her remarks have intensified the political rivalry within the AIADMK.

Panneerselvam’s move to the DMK surprised many political analysts. He joined the party during an event at the DMK headquarters, Arivalayam, in the presence of party president and current Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Importantly, Panneerselvam did not impose any conditions for his transition, according to party insiders.

Panneerselvam’s Critique of AIADMK Leadership

In a statement following his meeting with Stalin, Panneerselvam expressed satisfaction about rejoining what he referred to as the “mother party.” This label reflects the historical context that the AIADMK was established as a breakaway faction from the DMK in 1972. He took the opportunity to criticize Palaniswami’s leadership, describing him as a “dictator” and stating, “He has created a situation where the AIADMK cannot win from now on.”

The DMK welcomed Panneerselvam’s defection, with spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan asserting that his joining the party bolsters their position against the AIADMK. Elangovan highlighted the fears Palaniswami has about Panneerselvam’s influence, noting, “OPS has joined us to work against the BJP… It is very clear that the AIADMK has joined hands with a party which is against Tamil Nadu and Tamil people.”

Both Sasikala and Panneerselvam, now outside the AIADMK, draw upon their community ties, particularly with the Mukkulathor community, which remains significant in Tamil Nadu’s political dynamics. T.T.V. Dhinakaran, another leader from this community, is currently aligned with the AIADMK but has expressed notable disagreements with Palaniswami.

Future Implications for Tamil Nadu Politics

Panneerselvam’s switch raises questions about the future of the AIADMK, especially given his long-standing cooperation with the BJP since the passing of Jayalalithaa, the party’s iconic leader. His alignment with the DMK signifies a crucial tactical shift, particularly as he had previously expressed dissatisfaction with contesting as an independent candidate in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

His son, O.P. Raveendranath, remains the only AIADMK candidate to secure a seat during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, amidst a broader electoral failure for the party, which saw the DMK front winning 38 out of 39 seats in Tamil Nadu. Raveendranath’s confidence in the BJP’s support for the AIADMK has diminished as the party’s influence waned.
