Hindu Activists Protest Burial of Muslim Woman in Jabalpur
Panic erupted in Badhaiya Kheda, Jabalpur, on March 6, 2024, as Hindu activists protested against the burial of a 100-year-old Muslim woman, identified as Begum B, at a local graveyard. The demonstration, led by former BJP mandal President Sonu Patel, involved a sit-in outside the Mansoori Graveyard, where the burial was scheduled to take place. Activists alleged that the graveyard was established illegally on government land, prompting a significant response from law enforcement.
The conflict surrounding the burial site has been ongoing. The administration had locked the Mansoori Graveyard for three years due to a dispute over its status. Recently, the family of Begum B was able to obtain the keys from officials, allowing them to proceed with the burial. However, this development triggered the protest from Hindu activists, who chanted Hanuman Chalisa and Ramdhun as they staged their opposition.
Activists accused local authorities of “clandestine” cooperation with the Muslim community, claiming that the establishment of the graveyard was unlawful. The protest led to a tense standoff, with senior police officials arriving to mediate the situation. The Muslim community maintained that the land had been used as an ancestral cemetery for generations.
In response to the escalating tensions, SDM Shahpura confirmed that the allegations regarding the land’s status were investigated. The findings indicated that the site indeed belonged to the government. Following this confirmation, the Muslim family opted to relocate the burial to the Dadamiyan graveyard near Raddi Chowk, ensuring that Begum B could receive her final rites without further incident.
This episode highlights the underlying tensions regarding land use and community relations in Jabalpur, with both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. The resolution of this conflict remains a matter of significant local concern, as it underscores broader societal issues related to inter-community relations and land rights.
