Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes BJP’s Political Tactics in Assam
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaurav Gogoi accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of utilizing “money and muscle power” in elections, which he claims undermines democratic institutions in the state. His comments came during the Congress party’s Samay Parivartan Yatra, which reached Margherita on March 2, 2024. Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at the Margherita Congress Bhawan, Gogoi alleged that the local BJP Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) had achieved electoral success through financial coercion and intimidation.
Gogoi’s remarks resonated with party members and supporters, who applauded his assertion that “democracy suffers when elections are reduced to money and muscle.” He further claimed that the BJP government has cultivated a divisive atmosphere in Assam, highlighting tensions between various community groups, including Karbi and non-Karbi factions as well as Rabha and non-Rabha communities.
In a pointed critique of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi raised concerns over allegations that over 12,000 bighas of land is registered under the Chief Minister’s family name. He demanded transparency regarding these claims, indicating they have sparked public unease. Drawing on the legacy of historical figures, Gogoi quoted Lachit Borphukan, stating, “The nation is greater than one’s kin,” emphasizing that public office should transcend personal interests.
Gogoi also criticized the BJP’s decision to replace former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal after his second electoral term, which he described as revealing the party’s “anti-indigenous character.” He argued that dismissing an indigenous leader, despite electoral success, reflects the BJP’s deeper political motivations.
Concerns Over Economic and Social Issues
The meeting also featured Pradyut Bordoloi, the Member of Parliament for Nagaon, who highlighted pressing issues affecting the state, such as rising prices, unemployment, and the struggles of coal and tea garden workers. Bordoloi asserted that the Congress party remains the only viable alternative capable of addressing these significant concerns.
Senior Congress leader from Jharkhand, Bandhu Tirkey, joined in criticizing the BJP, while Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition, accused both the Central and State governments of misleading the public regarding key developmental and economic issues.
Amid speculation regarding potential candidates for the Congress party in Margherita, the dynamics of the event subtly suggested that Pratik Bordoloi may be the likely nominee, although no formal announcement was made. In response to media inquiries about alliance discussions, Gogoi indicated that negotiations are ongoing and being handled confidentially, refraining from commenting on Akhil Gogoi, the leader of the Raijor Dal.
In closing, Gogoi framed the Samay Parivartan Yatra as more than just a political campaign. He described it as a social movement aimed at preserving Assam’s identity, democracy, and future, urging attendees to unite for what he called a crucial phase in the state’s political landscape.
