The Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Assam is examining alleged connections between Congress Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi and a Pakistani national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Sheikh, who is an advisor to Pakistan’s Planning Commission, has been identified as a central figure in the investigation, which raises concerns about potential threats to India’s national security.

Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, reportedly has close ties with Sheikh, who founded the NGO LEAD Pakistan, where she has also worked. The SIT’s findings indicate that Sheikh has actively engaged in discussions regarding India’s internal affairs through his social media platforms. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed alarm at Sheikh’s online activity, suggesting it could be part of a strategy to undermine India’s interests.

Investigation Details and Implications

The SIT has gathered evidence suggesting that Sheikh has developed networks of Indian contacts through climate change forums and think tanks. Notably, both Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi participated in the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), which operates across India and Pakistan. Officials allege that Sheikh utilized these connections to influence policy discussions in India and foster relationships with like-minded activists.

The SIT’s release highlighted Sheikh’s “anti-India agenda,” claiming it is supported by sympathizers both within Assam and throughout India. Chief Minister Sarma noted that while Sheikh is not a government official, his activities represent a form of subterfuge. He remarked on the emergence of a “new model of hostile activity” that uses transnational networks and NGOs instead of traditional espionage methods.

Sarma indicated that the allegations involving Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi are serious enough to warrant communication with the Union Home Ministry, emphasizing the national security implications that extend beyond Assam. The involvement of a sitting MP, particularly the Deputy Leader of the Congress party in Parliament, adds gravity to the situation.

“These are grave allegations. A sitting MP linked to Pakistan in any manner automatically elevates the significance of the matter,” Sarma stated during a press briefing. He confirmed that the SIT had unearthed “startling facts” that could suggest a broader conspiracy.
