Local Community Celebrates Holiday with Unique ‘Smelly Santa’ Tradition
The festive season took an unexpected turn in a local community as residents embraced a new tradition dubbed “Smelly Santa.” This year, the neighbourhood apartments sought an older man to play the iconic role of Santa Claus for their annual holiday party. With a jovial spirit, a resident stepped up, albeit with a rather unconventional challenge—his Santa outfit carried a strong scent reminiscent of neglect.
Kamala, a keen observer in the community, playfully reminded him of his physique, suggesting that his “generous proportions” made him the ideal candidate for such festive roles. The Santa costume, retrieved from the school theatre storeroom, was in a less than desirable state. Despite attempts to freshen it up, the damp outfit retained a musty odour that proved difficult to eliminate.
After scrubbing the costume thoroughly, the resident resorted to using a body spray sourced from his son’s belongings, a product touted to attract admirers, albeit with questionable effectiveness. Dressed as Santa and smelling like an airport cosmetic store, he entered the party where “Joy to the World” played on repeat.
Initially met with curious glances, the Santa figure soon realised that the scent of his costume was drawing attention. Guests began to sniff the air suspiciously, reminiscent of reactions to unpleasant odours in public spaces. Kamala approached him, reminiscent of Lady Macbeth seeking exotic fragrances, and remarked, “You’re smelling really hideous!”
As the party continued, the transformation from Secret Santa to Smelly Santa became a running joke among attendees. The festive atmosphere, usually filled with the delightful scents of holiday treats like plum cake, kalkals, and marzipan, contrasted sharply with the unwelcome aroma surrounding the Santa figure.
The essence of the holiday season is often encapsulated by various scents—from the rich fragrance of baked goods to the fresh smell of wrapped gifts. For many, the memories associated with these smells can evoke strong feelings of nostalgia. The resident recalled his father as his personal Santa, whose comforting scent of talcum powder and soap provided a stark contrast to the current experience.
Helen Keller’s words ring true, highlighting smell’s ability to transport us through time and space. The community’s embrace of “Smelly Santa” serves as a reminder that the joy of the season can come from unexpected places. Next year, the resident vowed to ensure that Santa would arrive with a more pleasant aroma, aiming to embody the festive spirit more fully.
This unique holiday celebration not only reflects the community’s light-heartedness but also reinforces the importance of tradition and memory during this special time of year. As the season progresses, residents look forward to continuing their new tradition, hoping for a Santa that embodies the spirit of Christmas—one who perhaps smells a bit more like roses.
