Lakme Founder Simone Tata Passes Away at 95, Leaving Lasting Legacy
Simone Tata, a prominent figure in India’s business landscape and the founder of Lakme, passed away on October 10, 2024, at the age of 95. She was the stepmother of former Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata and mother to Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts. Her death followed a period of illness, during which she received treatment at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital after initial care in Dubai.
The Tata family confirmed her passing and announced that arrangements for her funeral were in place. Simone Tata is survived by her son Noel, daughter-in-law Aloo Mistry, and her grandchildren Neville, Maya, and Leah. She leaves behind a rich legacy marked by her contributions to the business world, particularly in cosmetics and retail.
A Legacy in Cosmetics and Retail Innovation
Simone Tata played a pivotal role in shaping Lakme into India’s leading cosmetic brand. She guided the company through its formative years and was instrumental in its transition to Hindustan Unilever in the 1990s. Under her leadership, Lakme not only thrived as a business but also became synonymous with India’s burgeoning consumer culture.
Her strategic vision was complemented by a deep understanding of the needs of Indian women, making Lakme a household name. The Tata Group praised her for her significant contributions to the company and for laying the groundwork for the fashion retail sector through brands like Westside.
Born in Geneva, Switzerland, as Simone Naval Dunoyer, she arrived in India as a tourist in 1953. Following her marriage to Naval H. Tata in 1955, she began her professional journey with the Tata Group. In 1961, she joined the board of Lakme, which was then a modest subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills Company (TOMCO).
Transforming India’s Retail Landscape
Simone Tata’s influence extended beyond cosmetics. She oversaw Lakme’s joint venture with Hindustan Unilever in 1996 and the subsequent sale of Lakme’s brands in 1998 for ₹200 crore. This strategic divestment allowed Lakme to pivot its focus toward the apparel market, leading to the acquisition of Littlewoods International India in March 1998. This move was crucial in establishing Trent Ltd, which now operates various retail formats including Westside and Zudio.
Her ability to identify market gaps and create homegrown retail brands has left a lasting impact on India’s fashion and business sectors. Simone Tata’s vision for consumer-centric products and innovative retail strategies continues to resonate, influencing generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders.
In addition to her business achievements, Simone Tata was also known for her philanthropic efforts. She played a significant role in guiding several charitable organizations, including the Sir Ratan Tata Institute, contributing to various social causes and educational initiatives.
The impact of Simone Tata’s life and work will be felt for many years to come, not only within the Tata Group but across India’s retail and cosmetics industries.
