India Surpasses Japan to Become World’s Fourth-Largest Economy
India has officially overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, marking a significant milestone as the country approaches the New Year 2026. This transition is bolstered by the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) upward revision of India’s GDP growth forecast for the fiscal year 2025-26 to 7.3 percent, an increase from the previous estimate of 6.8 percent.
The Indian economy is now valued at approximately $4.18 trillion. Projections suggest that India could displace Germany from the third position within the next 2.5 to 3 years, aiming for a GDP of $7.3 trillion by 2030. This remarkable achievement underscores India’s status as one of the fastest-growing major economies globally.
India’s Economic Growth Drivers
The latest economic data reveals that India’s GDP expanded at a six-quarter high during the second quarter of FY 2025-26, illustrating the country’s resilience amidst ongoing global trade uncertainties. The expansion was largely driven by robust domestic factors, particularly strong private consumption.
India’s real GDP grew by 8.2 percent in the second quarter, a notable increase from 7.8 percent in the previous quarter and 7.4 percent in the fourth quarter of FY 2024-25. This growth was supported by resilient domestic demand, even in the face of external trade pressures and policy uncertainties. Furthermore, real gross value added (GVA) rose by 8.1 percent, fueled by a thriving industrial sector and a flourishing services sector.
According to the RBI, “India is among the world’s fastest-growing major economies and is well-positioned to sustain this momentum.” The central bank emphasized the country’s ambition of achieving high middle-income status by 2047, which marks the centenary of its independence. This vision is built on strong foundations of economic growth, structural reforms, and social progress.
As India continues to navigate its economic landscape, the upward revision of growth forecasts signals a positive outlook. This achievement not only enhances India’s global economic standing but also reflects the effectiveness of its economic policies and structural reforms.
The RBI’s latest figures and statements highlight the significant strides India is making on the global stage. With its sights set on further economic advancement, the nation is poised to capitalize on its current growth trajectory in the coming years.
As the world looks towards 2026, India’s economic evolution remains a focal point, promising to reshape its role in the international economic arena.
