The survey included participants aged 18 to 26 from various educational and professional backgrounds across Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities in India. Approximately three in five users stated that this indirect approach stems from a desire to be emotionally cautious and to avoid the discomfort of direct rejection.

For instance, rather than openly complimenting a match, users employ humorous lines that suggest attraction in a more relaxed manner.

Indirect communication is another prevalent strategy among Gen Z daters. Approximately 19% of women and 15% of men aged 22 to 26 indicated that they prefer using subtle hints rather than explicit statements to gauge compatibility. A participant named Anwika, age 26, shared her approach by saying, “I often say ‘some people are worth the risk’ to matches I like.”

Humor also plays a vital role in these interactions, with four out of five users stating that they often mask serious feelings with jokes. This tactic helps to keep conversations light and avoid awkward moments that can arise in more serious exchanges.
