Government Ensures Fair Treatment for Sanitation Workers in Varanasi

In Varanasi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced significant measures to protect sanitation workers, ensuring they will no longer face exploitation. This statement coincided with the declaration of the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki as a public holiday, celebrated on October 7, 2023. Adityanath emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting those who maintain public health.

During a ceremony held on October 6, 2023, the Chief Minister honored 500 sanitation workers as part of a program marking the completion of former minister and City South MLA Neelkanth Tiwari‘s 75-day initiative to engage with constituents. The government will facilitate direct payments of wages, ranging from Rs 16,000 to Rs 20,000, to the bank accounts of sanitation workers. Additionally, all sanitation workers will receive Ayushman cards, which provide free medical treatment coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh annually for their families.

In his address, Adityanath remarked, “Our government is taking care of sanitation workers who care for everyone’s health. No sanitation worker will be exploited in any way now.” He highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of sanitation workers, particularly as the nation prepares to celebrate Valmiki Jayanti.

The Chief Minister also praised the recent engagement efforts by Tiwari, who met with over 33,000 individuals in his assembly area to better understand their challenges. Adityanath encouraged all public representatives to prioritize regular interaction with their constituents to address local issues effectively.

Highlighting the significance of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), he described it as a vital initiative for national health and prosperity. Under this campaign, toilets have been installed in 12 crore households, benefiting around 60 crore citizens across India. Adityanath asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s global image has notably improved.

The event saw emotional moments as Adityanath presented sanitation workers with traditional shawls, safety kits, and sweets. He also served food to the workers, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to their welfare.

As the nation gears up for Valmiki Jayanti, the initiatives announced by the Chief Minister reflect a broader effort to uplift and protect vulnerable workers in society.
