Ethiopian PM Welcomes Modi with Unique Gesture During Visit
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali warmly welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon his arrival at Addis Ababa Airport on March 5, 2024. This visit marks the second leg of Modi’s three-nation tour aimed at strengthening ties with African nations. In a notable diplomatic gesture, Prime Minister Abiy personally drove Modi to the Science Museum and Friendship Park, locations not originally included in the itinerary.
The visit underscores the significance of India-Ethiopia relations, which have been characterized by mutual respect and collaboration. According to the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, Modi received a “warm and colourful welcome,” showcasing the longstanding ties between the two nations. In a post on X, Jaiswal highlighted Abiy’s personal touch in welcoming Modi, stating, “Ethiopia is a key partner for India in the Global South and a fellow BRICS Member.”
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi participated in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony at the airport, reflecting the deepening friendship between the two countries. This ceremony is a significant cultural practice in Ethiopia, symbolizing hospitality and community. Following the ceremony, Modi engaged in informal discussions with Abiy, paving the way for formal talks.
India and Ethiopia share a history of collaboration in various sectors, including education, skilling, and capacity building. India has been instrumental in providing scholarships and training opportunities to Ethiopian students through programs administered by the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
India’s commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s renewable energy initiatives is evident through its involvement in the International Solar Alliance. The alliance has made substantial progress in Ethiopia, including the establishment of the Solar Technology Application Resource Centre at Addis Ababa University, aimed at fostering renewable energy technologies.
Upcoming Engagements
Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold both one-on-one and delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. These discussions are anticipated to cover a range of topics related to bilateral cooperation and development. Additionally, Modi will address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, further solidifying the partnership between India and Ethiopia.
In summary, Modi’s visit to Ethiopia not only signifies a strengthening of diplomatic ties but also reflects India’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its partnerships across Africa. The unique gestures by Abiy Ahmed during this visit highlight the potential for deeper collaboration between the two nations in the future.
