Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Hosts Modi to Strengthen Diplomatic Ties
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali personally welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Addis Ababa Airport on March 15, 2024, marking the beginning of Modi’s two-day state visit to Ethiopia. This visit, part of a three-nation trip, underscores India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Africa and enhancing South-South cooperation.
During the drive to Modi’s hotel, Prime Minister Abiy made a notable deviation from the planned itinerary by taking Modi to the Science Museum and Friendship Park in Addis Ababa. This gesture, showcasing Abiy’s respect and the growing ties between the two nations, highlights the importance of cultural diplomacy in international relations.
Warm Welcome and Cultural Exchange
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi received a “warm and colourful welcome” upon his arrival. The spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, emphasized the significance of this first bilateral visit to Ethiopia. In a post on X, he noted, “Ethiopia is a key partner for India in the Global South and a fellow BRICS Member.”
A highlight of the visit included a traditional Coffee Ceremony at the airport, symbolizing the cultural bond between the two leaders. The ceremony provided an opportunity for informal discussions, further solidifying the friendship between India and Ethiopia.
Strengthening India-Ethiopia Ties
India and Ethiopia share a long-standing partnership focused on education, skill development, and capacity building. India has been proactive in providing scholarships and training through initiatives like the International Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships.
In addition to educational support, India plays a significant role in Ethiopia’s renewable energy initiatives, particularly through the International Solar Alliance. The establishment of the Solar Technology Application Resource Centre (STARC) at Addis Ababa University exemplifies this collaboration, fostering advancements in solar technology and sustainability.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to engage in one-on-one discussions with Abiy and participate in delegation-level talks. He will also address a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, reinforcing India’s strategic commitment to partner with Ethiopia in various sectors.
This visit not only reflects the deepening of diplomatic relations between India and Ethiopia but also showcases a broader vision for collaboration in areas ranging from education to renewable energy. As both nations look to the future, the gestures of goodwill and cultural exchange will serve as a foundation for their ongoing partnership.
