Children Explore Historic Anantapur Sub-Jail for First Time

The historic Anantapur Sub-Jail, which has stood for 143 years, opened its doors to children and the public for the first time during World Heritage Week celebrations. This unprecedented event took place in Anantapur, India, as part of a heritage walk organized by several local bodies, including the Ananthapur Municipal Corporation (AMC), the District Tourism Department, and the Department of Archaeology.

The programme culminated with a valedictory session at the Padmasri Kallur Subbarao Archaeology Museum on Tuesday, where Collector O. Anand emphasized the vital role of preserving heritage monuments for future generations. The week-long celebrations included guided tours of significant heritage landmarks in Anantapur, such as the historic Collectorate, Victoria Hospital, Arts College, and the old Sub-Jail, culminating in a visit to the District Museum.

Participants, including local historians and families, experienced a curated route that provided an immersive exploration of Ananthapuram’s colonial and pre-Independence history. The founder of Discover Ananthapur, A.G. Anil Kumar, expressed gratitude to Collector Anand and Municipal Commissioner Balaswamy for their support in restoring the Sub-Jail in just seven days. This restoration made it possible for the public to access a structure that had been closed for over a century.

The heritage walk was designed to be engaging and family-friendly, with participants receiving heritage-themed memorabilia such as fridge magnets, coffee mugs, calendars, customized canvas bags, and exclusive badges featuring landmarks of Ananthapur.

Discover Ananthapur also highlighted its significant restoration projects during the event. Notably, the revival of the 13th-century stepwell near Tank Bund, which earned the organization the International Tourism Award 2024 for community-led conservation. Additionally, the restoration of the early-20th-century Rachanapalli Bridge underscored the district’s engineering heritage, showcasing a commitment to preserving the region’s historical identity.

This opening of the Sub-Jail marks a significant step in making Anantapur’s rich history accessible to a wider audience, particularly the youth, fostering a greater appreciation for the area’s cultural legacy. As communities come together to celebrate and learn from their past, such initiatives play a crucial role in safeguarding history for future generations.
