Bishop Urges Solidarity with the Poor This Christmas Season

Bishop Derrick Fernandes emphasized the significance of Christmas as a time of hope, solidarity, and connection with the poor during his annual Christmas message delivered in Belagavi on December 25, 2023. He encouraged the Christian community to engage actively with those in need, not just as benefactors, but as fellow travelers on a shared journey.

During a recent media conference, Bishop Fernandes stated, “Christmas, at its very heart, is a feast for the poor, of the poor and it is to be celebrated with the poor.” He urged believers to seek justice and work towards creating a society rooted in mercy. The Bishop called on the faithful to “go consciously in search of the poor,” encouraging them to encounter Christ in the faces of those less fortunate.

The Bishop underscored the importance of listening to the stories of the poor and sharing in their struggles, highlighting that through this interaction, individuals can rediscover the true essence of Christmas. He expressed that genuine solidarity brings joy and enriches lives.

Bishop Fernandes reflected on the humble origins of Christ, reminding attendees that “the mystery of Christmas reveals a God who chose poverty.” He noted that Christ was born in a manger, symbolizing a divine choice to embrace humanity’s struggles. This profound truth, he argued, raises critical questions for modern society, particularly in a world grappling with inequality, conflict, and indifference.

He pointed out that Christmas should not be limited to festive lights and gifts, but should also inspire compassion and inclusivity. “It invites us instead to open our eyes, hearts and homes to those who are forgotten, excluded and suffering,” he said. The Bishop highlighted a shift in perspective, suggesting that the rich need the poor to recognize the divine presence among them.

Bishop Fernandes referenced biblical scripture, stating, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor.” He expressed hope that this Christmas would inspire individuals, communities, and institutions to stand alongside the disadvantaged, advocating for justice and fostering a culture of compassion.

In the Belgaum Diocese, which encompasses five districts including Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot, and Haveri, the faithful are expected to participate in midnight prayer services on Christmas Day. This communal observance serves as a reminder of the Bishop’s call to solidarity and compassion, resonating with the core message of the Christmas season.
