Balloh Village Celebrates Women with Unique Mother-in-law Awards

In a pioneering initiative, the panchayat of Balloh village in Bathinda district has recognized six women with the inaugural “Best Mother-in-law Award.” This event, held on March 8, 2024, coincided with International Women’s Day and aimed to foster harmony within families by strengthening the relationships between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law.

The awards were presented during a ceremony organized by sarpanch Amarjit Kaur, who emphasized the importance of nurturing affectionate bonds in families. “Our goal is to celebrate those women who have transformed traditional dynamics into loving, mother-daughter-like relationships,” she stated. The recipients were chosen based on feedback from ASHA workers and local residents regarding their contributions to family harmony.

Honoring Strong Relationships

The six awardees, Gurdev Kaur, Jaswinder Kaur, Surjit Kaur, Charanjit Kaur, Mukhtiar Kaur, and Jaswinder Kaur, received accolades for their exemplary roles in fostering positive relationships with their daughters-in-law. Rupinder Kaur Gill, senior vice-chairperson of the Punjab State Women Commission, attended the event as the chief guest. She remarked on the societal perceptions of the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship, stating, “These respected women have set an example by nurturing this relationship with understanding and love.”

The ceremony also included recognition for women who have actively engaged with their community’s library. Jasjit Kaur, Amandeep Kaur, and Mintu Pal Kaur were honored for reading the highest number of books, an initiative aimed at encouraging literacy among rural women.

Celebrating Community and Heritage

A special certificate of appreciation was awarded to Surjit Kaur, the village’s eldest resident at 98 years old, acknowledging her contributions and wisdom. Balloh village has garnered attention for implementing various innovative initiatives that enhance community spirit and promote women’s empowerment.
