SKIMS Cardiology Achieves First Micra Leadless Pacemaker Implantation in Kashmir
The Department of Cardiology at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Kashmir has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing the first-ever implantation of a Micra leadless pacemaker. This pioneering procedure took place on December 21, 2023, and marks a major advancement in cardiac care within the region.
The procedure was conducted on a high-risk patient who had a history of bilateral pacemaker allergy and recurrent infections associated with conventional pacemaker systems. Given the patient’s medical history, it became necessary to completely remove the traditional pacing system, making a leadless pacemaker the safest option. The Micra leadless pacemaker, which is nearly 90 percent smaller than traditional devices, is implanted directly into the right ventricle via a catheter, eliminating the need for surgical chest pockets or transvenous leads. This design significantly reduces the risk of device-related infections.
Minimally Invasive Procedure Enhances Patient Safety
The implantation was performed in a cardiac catheterization laboratory using a minimally invasive femoral venous approach, guided by fluoroscopy. The device was positioned with precision within the right ventricle, enabling stable pacing without the need for a chest incision. Following the procedure, the patient experienced an uneventful recovery, highlighting the advantages of leadless pacing, including a reduced risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, and quicker returns to normal activities.
Prof. M Ashraf Ganie, Director of SKIMS, praised the Department of Cardiology for this landmark achievement. He stated, “Such advancements in patient care take us forward with our clearly defined objective of providing the most advanced and evidence-based treatment to the people across Jammu and Kashmir. The successful implantation of a Micra leadless pacemaker reflects SKIMS’ continued commitment to innovation, excellence, and patient safety.”
A New Era in Cardiac Device Therapy
Dr. Hilal A. Rather, Head of the Department of Cardiology at SKIMS, described the introduction of the Micra leadless pacemaker as “the beginning of a new era in device therapy for bradyarrhythmias in Kashmir.” He emphasized that this technology is particularly beneficial for patients who are at high risk of infection or those with limited venous access. Dr. Rather also acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the electrophysiology division, led by Professor Ajaz Lone, along with his team, which includes Dr. Iqbal Dar and Dr. Tahir, for successfully executing this complex procedure.
With this achievement, SKIMS Cardiology joins a select group of medical centers in India that offer state-of-the-art leadless pacemaker therapy. This development reinforces SKIMS’ commitment to providing advanced and patient-centric cardiac care in the region, setting a new standard in the management of cardiac rhythm disorders.
