India Expands AIIMS from 6 to 23, Showcasing Health Reforms
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda announced significant progress in India’s healthcare system during a recent address at the 8th Convocation Ceremony of Swami Rama Himalayan University in Dehradun. He highlighted the expansion of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) from 6 to 23 facilities over the past eleven years, a development he attributed to the health reforms initiated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Nadda emphasized the importance of this expansion in increasing access to advanced tertiary healthcare services across the country. He urged new medical graduates to embrace the highest ideals of their profession, dedicating their skills to the service of humanity. The minister underscored that the rise in institutional deliveries to nearly 89 percent reflects a strengthened maternal healthcare system in India.
The address further highlighted significant improvements in maternal and child health outcomes. The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has decreased from 130 per lakh live births a decade ago to 88 per lakh live births. Similarly, the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has dropped from 39 per thousand live births to 27 per thousand live births. These metrics indicate sustained progress in healthcare delivery for mothers and infants.
Nadda cited estimates from the World Health Organization and various UN agencies, noting that India has seen a notably faster decline in the Under-5 Mortality Rate over the past decade compared to the global average. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of targeted policy interventions and the expansion of healthcare access.
In addressing the issue of tuberculosis, Nadda pointed out that India has successfully reduced TB incidence rates, outperforming the global average through rigorous public health measures and community-based initiatives. These advancements reflect a comprehensive approach to tackling infectious diseases in the country.
The minister also spoke on India’s historic COVID-19 vaccination campaign, which has seen the administration of over 220 crore vaccine doses, including precautionary and booster shots. This accomplishment demonstrates the scale, resilience, and efficiency of India’s public health system in responding to the pandemic.
Nadda’s remarks encapsulate a transformative period in Indian healthcare, highlighting both the achievements and the path forward in strengthening the health sector for future generations. As the nation continues to invest in medical infrastructure and public health initiatives, the focus remains on improving health outcomes for all citizens.
