FBI Arrests North Carolina Teen for ISIS-Inspired Attack Plot
An 18-year-old from Mint Hill, North Carolina, has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly plotting an ISIS-inspired mass-casualty attack. Christian Sturdivant was taken into custody on December 31, 2025, after a criminal complaint revealed his detailed plans for an assault aimed at civilians during New Year’s Eve celebrations in 2026.
The investigation uncovered that Sturdivant intended to use knives and hammers in his attack on a local grocery store and a fast-food restaurant. He reportedly aimed to kill multiple individuals before confronting law enforcement officers responding to the scene. The quick actions of federal and local agencies ultimately averted what could have been a tragic event.
Details of the Alleged Attack
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Sturdivant had been planning this attack for nearly a year and had pledged allegiance to ISIS. Court documents indicate that he sent a loyalty oath to the group on December 19, 2025. Sturdivant expressed a desire to die as a martyr during the planned assault, and investigators found detailed notes titled “New Year’s Attack 2026.” These notes outlined plans to stab up to 20 people and attack law enforcement officers who would respond to the emergency.
The investigation began in 2022, when Sturdivant was flagged for communicating with an overseas ISIS contact. Although he did not face charges at that time, he received psychological treatment. By December 2025, the FBI had intercepted numerous communications between Sturdivant and undercover agents posing as ISIS supporters. During these interactions, he shared images of weapons and discussed specific attack strategies for his planned New Year’s Eve assault.
Seizure of Weapons and Tactical Gear
On December 29, 2025, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Sturdivant’s residence, uncovering a variety of weapons and tactical equipment. This included knives, hammers, gloves, and a tactical vest. The items discovered, coupled with Sturdivant’s handwritten attack plans, provided clear evidence of his intent to carry out a violent act.
Currently, Sturdivant remains in federal custody and has not entered a plea. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison for attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, which collaborates with local police agencies, played a crucial role in preventing this potential tragedy. Attorney General Pamela Bondi commended the swift response of law enforcement, emphasizing that the arrest not only saved lives but also sent a strong message to would-be terrorists.
FBI Director Kash Patel highlighted the growing challenges in identifying homegrown terrorists inspired by international organizations like ISIS. He praised the efforts of investigators and local law enforcement in thwarting Sturdivant’s plans, underscoring the importance of intelligence sharing and vigilance in addressing domestic terrorism threats.
The arrest of Christian Sturdivant serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by radicalized individuals and the critical need for proactive measures to prevent such attacks from occurring in communities worldwide.
