Endocrinologist Warns of Prediabetes as a Type 2 Diabetes Indicator
A prominent endocrinologist in Kashmir has sounded the alarm about prediabetes, identifying it as a critical warning sign for the onset of Type 2 diabetes. In an interview with ETV Bharat, Dr. Shariq Masoodi emphasized the importance of recognizing prediabetes, a condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels that do not yet meet the criteria for diabetes.
According to Dr. Masoodi, prediabetes represents a significant health concern, as it often goes undetected due to a lack of symptoms. He explained that the American Diabetes Association revised its classification in 1997, introducing new thresholds for diagnosing prediabetes. Currently, impaired fasting glucose ranges from 100-125 mg/dl, and impaired glucose tolerance is between 199-140 mg/dl. Additionally, an HbA1c test result between 5.7 to 6.4 percent is indicative of prediabetes.
Understanding Prediabetes and Its Causes
Dr. Masoodi described prediabetes as a reversible condition. He noted that lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of progressing to Type 2 diabetes. “Prediabetes is not a disease, but a clear warning sign,” he stated, encouraging individuals to take proactive steps in managing their health.
Several factors contribute to the development of prediabetes, including race, genetics, environment, age, diet, and weight. Historically prevalent among individuals over the age of 40, prediabetes is now increasingly diagnosed in younger populations due to shifts in lifestyle and eating habits. Dr. Masoodi pointed out that the risk of developing prediabetes escalates after the age of 45. Individuals with a family history of Type 2 diabetes or those who have experienced gestational diabetes are also at heightened risk.
Preventive Strategies to Combat Prediabetes
While genetics play a role in the likelihood of developing prediabetes, Dr. Masoodi emphasized the importance of addressing modifiable risk factors through targeted lifestyle changes. He outlined five critical measures to help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes:
“Making alterations in diet, increasing physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, monitoring blood glucose levels, and seeking regular medical advice are essential steps in managing prediabetes,” Dr. Masoodi advised.
By prioritizing these preventive strategies, individuals can significantly lower their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Masoodi’s insights highlight the urgent need for awareness and action regarding prediabetes, urging the public to recognize this condition not as a mere statistic but as a personal health warning.
