Cipla Launches India’s First Inhalable Insulin, Afrezza

Cipla has officially launched Afrezza, marking the introduction of India’s first inhalable rapid-acting insulin. This innovative product, manufactured by Connecticut-based MannKind Corporation, has received regulatory approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and is now available for patients managing diabetes across the country.

The launch of Afrezza comes at a crucial time, as India faces a significant increase in diabetes cases, with estimates suggesting that approximately 10.1 crore individuals live with the condition. Of these, between 10 to 15 percent require insulin therapy. Unfortunately, fewer than 40 percent of patients adhere to regular insulin treatment, highlighting a critical gap in diabetes management.

Revolutionizing Diabetes Management

Afrezza offers a new method of insulin delivery that may enhance patient compliance. Instead of traditional subcutaneous injections, patients can use a small handheld inhaler to inhale insulin directly into their lungs. This method allows for rapid absorption of the drug into the bloodstream, potentially benefiting those who are hesitant to use injections or struggle with maintaining regular insulin therapy.

According to market research, it is estimated that only 50.48 lakh individuals in India are regular insulin users. The low adherence rates can be attributed to various factors, including fear of needles and the complexities of traditional insulin regimens. Afrezza aims to address these barriers, offering a patient-friendly alternative that could significantly improve blood sugar management, particularly after meals.

Achin Gupta, global chief operating officer at Cipla, emphasized the company’s commitment to raising awareness about this new treatment. He stated that Cipla plans to launch nationwide educational programs aimed at informing patients and their families about the benefits of inhalable insulin. These initiatives will also help destigmatize the use of injections.

A New Era for Inhalable Insulin

The reintroduction of inhalable insulin technology through Afrezza also revives interest in this delivery method, which faced challenges in the past. Previously, Pfizer attempted to market Exubera in 2006, but the product ultimately failed due to its bulky delivery device, insurance coverage issues, and concerns regarding lung health. However, advancements in technology, particularly with MannKind’s innovative Technosphere insulin platform, have addressed these concerns.

Afrezza’s design promotes faster absorption of powdered insulin, providing a modern alternative for adults with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is positioned as part of comprehensive glycaemic control strategies, enhancing patient options in managing their diabetes effectively.
