Tamil Nadu Boosts Pensions for Workers, Expands Social Security

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced significant increases in pensions and retirement benefits for various workers, including noon meal organizers and Anganwadi workers. During a session in the Assembly addressing the motion of thanks to the Governor’s speech, Stalin confirmed that the monthly pension will rise from ₹2,000 to ₹3,400. Additionally, retirement benefits for these workers will double from ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh.

Stalin also detailed enhancements to family pensions for noon meal organizers and Anganwadi workers, which will now be set at ₹1,200 and ₹1,100, respectively. For mini Anganwadi workers and forest frontline staff, the pension will increase from ₹2,000 to ₹3,200, with their retirement benefits also doubling to ₹2 lakh. Anganwadi assistants, cooks, and cleaning staff will see their monthly pensions raised from ₹2,000 to ₹3,000, while retirement benefits will increase from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh.

New Pension Scheme Announcement

As part of the government’s commitment to social security, a new pension scheme will be launched on February 4. This initiative aims to support approximately 1.80 lakh individuals, with beneficiaries selected based on requests received through the “Stalin with You” camps. This scheme is expected to broaden the current social security framework, which already assists 33.6 lakh senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, widows, and farmers, among others.

In addition to the pension enhancements, Stalin addressed educational initiatives, stating that a government order will soon be issued to fill part-time teaching positions in state-run schools. The new policy will award special marks to part-time teachers based on their experience, facilitating their transition to permanent roles. This effort aims to enhance the quality of education in Tamil Nadu’s government institutions by ensuring experienced educators are retained.

Infrastructure Development Plans

The Chief Minister also outlined ambitious plans for infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu. Under the Kalaignar housing scheme, one lakh houses will be constructed to improve living conditions for residents. Moreover, approximately 2,200 km of rural roads will be upgraded through the Chief Minister’s Rural Roads Development Scheme, with an estimated budget of ₹1,088 crore. These infrastructure projects are part of the state’s broader strategy to enhance economic growth and living standards in rural areas.

Through these announcements, the Tamil Nadu government aims to bolster support for its workers while improving educational standards and infrastructure development, thereby contributing to the overall welfare of its citizens.
