Nizamabad Collector Demands Accountability for Electoral Roll Delays
The District Election Officer and Collector of Nizamabad, Ila Tripathi, has emphasized the urgent need for accountability among Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) regarding delays in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In a review meeting held on October 3, 2023, at the municipal corporation office, she stressed that the preparatory process must adhere closely to the guidelines set forth by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Review Meeting Highlights Urgency of Accurate Electoral Rolls
With the potential for municipal election notifications imminent, Tripathi underscored the necessity of preparing the final electoral roll with precision. She outlined the importance of eliminating errors during this critical phase. The meeting included discussions on the implementation of SIR and the draft electoral roll for the Nizamabad urban constituency, where progress has been notably inconsistent.
During the meeting, Tripathi reviewed the SIR implementation status on a polling-station basis and called for explanations from AEROs and BLO supervisors who had not met performance expectations. She remarked that officials must possess a thorough understanding of ECI regulations and insisted on tangible progress across the 301 polling stations within the urban area.
Noting that the urban segment was falling behind schedule, Tripathi demanded immediate action to rectify this situation. She instructed that comprehensive mapping with BLOs be conducted for each polling station, ensuring that all eligible voters are accurately included in the electoral roll.
Emphasis on Transparency and Accountability
Tripathi announced plans for a follow-up review over the weekend to assess the advancement of SIR implementation. She reiterated that the electoral roll must be prepared transparently, free from any external pressure or inducements. She cautioned that any complaints regarding the electoral roll would result in accountability for the responsible BLOs and supervisors.
“There should be no mistakes in the preparation of the electoral roll,” Tripathi asserted, emphasizing that not even a single eligible voter’s name should be omitted, nor should any fictitious voter be included.
Additionally, she highlighted the importance of focusing on newly merged areas and mandated thorough field-level verification. As the preparations for the municipal elections advance, the pressure is on local officials to ensure that the electoral process remains fair and accurate, ensuring that every eligible voter has a voice in the upcoming elections.
