A recent meeting in New Delhi has reaffirmed the strategic partnership between India and Poland, with both nations committing to an enhanced collaboration through a detailed Action Plan for 2024-2028. The meeting, held on Thursday, involved discussions between Sibi George, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Wladyslaw T Bartoszewski, Polish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

During this session, the two officials reviewed the progress of their bilateral relations and focused on key deliverables of the Action Plan. Following the meeting, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted on social media that the talks were productive and emphasized the commitment of both sides to strengthening their strategic partnership.

Key Developments in Bilateral Relations

The strategic partnership between India and Poland was elevated during Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit to Poland in August 2024. This new phase of cooperation includes a five-year Joint Action Plan, which aims to enhance areas such as defense, technology, and trade. On January 19, 2024, S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, met with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Radoslaw Sikorski to further discuss advancing cooperation in these sectors.

In a post-meeting update, Jaishankar noted, “The meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski provided an opportunity for an open conversation on our bilateral ties and global developments.” The discussions encompassed a wide range of topics, including economic collaboration, defense strategies, and multilateral cooperation.

Commitment to Security and Cooperation

The dialogue between India and Poland has also prioritized security and technology. In December, both nations participated in the 11th round of Foreign Office Consultations, where they agreed to expedite efforts in defense, security, science, technology, cyber security, and artificial intelligence. The meeting was co-chaired by Sibi George and Wladyslaw T Bartoszewski, emphasizing a mutual commitment to combatting terrorism in all its forms.

According to the MEA, “Both sides took stock of progress under the India-Poland Strategic Partnership, particularly with reference to the Five-Year Action Plan (2024-2028).” The statement noted that Poland is India’s largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe, further solidifying the importance of this relationship. Additionally, the Polish government reiterated its support for the early conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signaling a shared interest in enhancing trade links between India and the EU.

The developments from this meeting reflect the ongoing commitment of both nations to strengthen their strategic partnership and collaborate on pressing global issues. As India and Poland continue to navigate the complexities of international relations, their cooperative efforts are likely to yield significant benefits for both countries in the years ahead.
