Traders Urge Election Chief to Raise Cash Limit to Rs 5 Lakh
Traders in Tamil Nadu are advocating for an increase in the cash limit for individuals during the election season, requesting that it be raised to Rs 5 lakh. This appeal was made by the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peraimaippu, under the leadership of A M Vikramaraja. The traders are urging Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik to consider the effects of inflation and ensure that the movement of food-related items remains unhindered during this critical period.
The traders’ federation expressed concern that current regulations may impede the smooth transportation of goods essential for daily life. They argue that allowing the free movement of goods valued at up to Rs 5 lakh is crucial for both traders and consumers. The federation emphasized that goods transported with appropriate documentation should not be subject to seizure.
In addition to raising the cash limit, the federation is calling for a fair adjudication process for cases where goods exceeding the limit are confiscated. They stressed the importance of not harassing traders during such procedures, advocating for a balanced approach that protects both regulatory integrity and the livelihoods of those in the trading community.
The call for these changes comes at a time when the election season typically sees increased scrutiny of financial transactions. Traders are hopeful that their requests will lead to greater flexibility, allowing for continued commerce and stability in the market.
As the election period approaches, the dialogue between traders and election officials will be critical. The outcome of this appeal could significantly impact the operational capacity of local businesses, particularly those dealing in essential goods.
