Kauvery Group Launches GI Bleed Centres to Enhance Emergency Care
The Kauvery Group of Hospitals has established dedicated Gastrointestinal (GI) Bleed Centres across its facilities in Tamil Nadu, with services also extending into Karnataka. This initiative aims to bolster emergency responses to gastrointestinal bleeding, a condition that can be life-threatening without prompt treatment.
Gastrointestinal bleeding encompasses internal bleeding anywhere along the digestive tract, often presenting as a medical emergency. The urgency in diagnosis and intervention is critical, as delays can significantly heighten the risk of morbidity and mortality, particularly in patients with pre-existing liver disease, ulcers, or other high-risk conditions.
Comprehensive Emergency Services Offered
The newly launched centres, located in 12 units throughout Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, provide 24/7 emergency endoscopy and advanced treatment options. These include injection therapy, banding, glue therapy, and coil embolisation. For complex cases, interventional radiology and surgical support are also readily available.
P. Basumani, director of the Kauvery Institute of Digestive Sciences, highlighted the various causes of GI bleeding, which can stem from ulcers, gastric erosions, or variceal bleeds associated with liver disease. He underscored the importance of early assessment and timely intervention, stating, “Effective management depends on early assessment, stabilisation, accurate diagnosis, and timely intervention. Delays can be life-threatening.”
Aravindan Selvaraj, co-founder and executive director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, emphasized that access to timely specialized care is crucial in emergencies. This initiative aligns with the hospital’s commitment to improving patient outcomes in critical situations.
Expert Team at the Forefront
The launch featured prominent medical professionals including T.K. Anand, senior consultant in Medical Gastroenterology and Interventional Endoscopy; S. Vadivel Kumaran, senior consultant in Medical Gastroenterology; and Pandurangan Basumani, senior consultant and Interventional Gastroenterologist. Additionally, Iyappan Ponnuswamy, medical director of Kauvery Hospital in Chennai; Swaminathan Sambandam, senior consultant leading Multi-Organ Transplant services; and Piyush Bawane, clinical lead in Medical Gastroenterology, were present.
The establishment of these specialized centres marks a significant advancement in the capabilities of the Kauvery Group of Hospitals, positioning them to effectively manage gastrointestinal emergencies. As healthcare providers increasingly recognize the critical nature of rapid response in such cases, this initiative stands out as a proactive measure to enhance patient care in the region.
