Indian Pharma Leaders Strategize to Elevate Export Growth
In a significant gathering held in Ahmedabad, the Pharmexcil Chintan Shivir brought together regulatory officials and leaders from the pharmaceutical industry to devise strategies aimed at enhancing India’s pharmaceutical exports. The event focused on aligning regulatory frameworks, streamlining policies, and leveraging global market opportunities to accelerate growth in this vital sector.
The inaugural session featured a recorded message from Goyal, the Commerce Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, who emphasized the necessity of regulatory agility, quality compliance, and market diversification. Key discussions among representatives from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), and state regulatory bodies centered on the need to simplify licensing procedures and clarify compliance expectations, which are crucial for expediting export approvals.
Insightful Perspectives on Future Growth
Vice Chairman of Pharmexcil, Bhavin Mehta, explained that the Chintan Shivir concept is inspired by initiatives led by the Indian Prime Minister to chart a path for national progress. He stated, “These forums focus on our roadmap for the next decade, particularly on how India can strategically capitalize on the nearly US$400 billion worth of molecules going off-patent globally.” His remarks underscored the importance of structural and regulatory innovations necessary for seizing these opportunities.
As a burgeoning pharmaceutical hub, Gujarat is positioning itself as a leader in the industry. With initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, the state is making significant strides in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The establishment of facilities for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in regions like Bharuch aligns with the goal of enhancing domestic production and reducing reliance on imports. Industry experts predict that with continued policy support, Gujarat could see substantial export increases over the next three to five years.
Navigating Global Challenges and Opportunities
Dr. Viranchi Shah, Chairman of the Regulatory Affairs Committee of Pharmexcil, commented on the rapidly changing global landscape. He noted that shifting trade frameworks and evolving demographic needs present both challenges and opportunities for the industry. “The question before us now is — what more can we achieve in the next 10 to 25 years? The opportunity is immense,” he said, highlighting the importance of innovation and adaptability.
During the Chintan Shivir, participants shared real-world experiences regarding regulatory costs and strategies for integrating into the global pharmaceutical supply chain. Vishal H Rajgarhia, Director of Finecure Pharmaceuticals, emphasized the need for a forward-looking approach. “The Pharmexcil Chintan Shivir outlined a roadmap focused on value creation through innovation and enhanced market access via Free Trade Agreements (FTAs),” he explained.
The event also previewed the upcoming IPHEX 2026, an international exhibition and conference aimed at showcasing India’s strengths in the pharmaceutical sector. Chairman of IPHEX 2026, Nipun Jain, stated that the event would serve as a platform for stakeholders to connect and explore new business opportunities. He noted that this year’s exhibition would highlight the sector’s transition towards higher-value offerings and enhanced compliance standards, further solidifying India’s status as a reliable global partner in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The outcomes of the Ahmedabad Chintan Shivir signal a collaborative effort to propel India’s pharmaceutical exports forward, ensuring that the industry remains competitive and well-positioned in the global market.
