Data Retrieved from Learjet Crash; Investigations Underway
On January 28, 2024, a tragic accident involving a Learjet 45 resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar. The aircraft crashed near Baramati airport during its approach to land, claiming the lives of Captain Sumit Kapoor, co-pilot Shambhavi Pathak, Personal Security Officer Vidip Jadhav, and flight attendant Pinky Mali.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has confirmed the successful retrieval of data from the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) from the ill-fated jet. Despite suffering severe heat and fire damage, the DFDR was downloaded at the AAIB Flight Recorder Laboratory. The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), however, is currently undergoing a detailed technical examination. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has requested assistance from the Accredited Representative of the State of Manufacture to aid in the recovery of data from the damaged CVR.
Ongoing Investigations and Findings
Both the AAIB and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have initiated parallel investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The DGCA’s inquiry will focus on the aircraft’s airworthiness and operational condition. Officials anticipate that the examination of relevant documents from the operating company will take between 10 to 15 days. These investigations are crucial in determining the crash’s cause and any subsequent actions that may be required.
The Learjet 45 took off from Mumbai at 08:10 and disappeared from radar approximately 35 minutes later. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu indicated that a preliminary report is expected to be released soon, aligning with international guidelines that suggest issuing such reports within 30 days. Nonetheless, it is important to note that India is not legally obligated to adhere to this timeline.
Concerns regarding the investigation’s accountability have been raised by Rohit Pawar, a Nationalist Congress Party MLA and nephew of Ajit Pawar. He has suggested the potential for conspiracy or sabotage in the crash and has called for the involvement of an independent international agency to ensure a comprehensive review.
The AAIB has urged stakeholders and the public to refrain from speculation and to allow the investigation to proceed according to established protocols. As the inquiry continues, the focus remains on uncovering the full details surrounding this devastating incident.
