The government of Tamil Nadu has earmarked ₹1,943 crore for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in the interim budget for the financial year 2026–27. The allocation was announced on February 17, 2026, by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu during a session in the State Legislative Assembly. This funding initiative aims to bolster the growth of MSMEs across the state.

In his budget speech, Minister Thennarasu outlined plans to create a “Fund of Funds” specifically for the MSME sector. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance financial support and development opportunities for small businesses. Over the past five years, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government has facilitated bank loans totaling ₹10.70 lakh crore to more than 4 million MSMEs in Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation (TANSIDCO) has developed 18 new industrial estates during this period. The Minister also reported that under the ‘Kalaignar Kaivinai Thittam’, a scheme designed to assist artisans, a total of 23,879 applications have been approved. This program provides financial assistance, skill training, and infrastructure support to artisans working in 25 categories of handicrafts. So far, ₹405 crore in credit assistance and ₹83 crore in subsidies have been disbursed under this initiative.

Innovative Financial Platforms and Start-Up Growth

Another significant advancement in the MSME sector is the launch of the Tamil Nadu Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS). This payment platform has enabled 1,461 businesses to conduct transactions worth ₹5,171 crore. This system aims to streamline financial dealings for MSMEs, making it easier for them to access credit and manage cash flow.

The Finance Minister highlighted the remarkable growth in the number of registered start-ups in Tamil Nadu, which has increased fivefold over the last five years, surpassing 13,000. This surge is attributed to various initiatives, including the Tamil Nadu Startup and Innovation Mission (TANSIM). The government has also introduced the Tamil Nadu Startup Seed Fund (TANSEED) and the ‘Space Technology Fund’ to further strengthen the state’s start-up ecosystem.

These comprehensive measures reflect Tamil Nadu’s commitment to fostering a robust environment for MSMEs and start-ups, underlining their vital role in the state’s economic development. The government’s proactive approach aims to create more job opportunities while enhancing the overall business landscape.
