Ten Indian Students Shine at Global Nuclear Tech Programme in Russia
Ten Indian students recently participated in the prestigious Obninsk Tech Winter School 2026, a global nuclear technology programme held in Russia. This program attracted students from 47 countries, selecting only 120 participants from over 350 applications worldwide. The event took place from February 1 to 7, 2026, and was organized with the assistance of the Russian atomic energy state corporation, Rosatom, at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.
The Obninsk Tech Winter School offered a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in advanced nuclear science and engineering. Participants engaged in a variety of workshops and technical training sessions, collaborating with peers from different countries. During the seven-day program, students attended master classes led by MEPhI representatives and lectures focused on emerging businesses under Rosatom’s umbrella, as part of the AtomPRO educational project.
Practical work areas included dosimetry, electronics and automation for nuclear power plants, radiation control, 3D modeling, electrical engineering for nuclear facilities, non-destructive testing, and materials science. Participants were also given the chance to visit key sites in the Kaluga region, such as the Rosatom Technical Academy and the State Research Center of the Russian Federation—IPPE, enhancing their understanding of real-world applications in nuclear technology.
At the conclusion of the winter school, an international student competition called the HackAtom championship was held. Teams were tasked with developing innovative projects aimed at advancing nuclear education within a 24-hour timeframe. Initiatives included proposals for a master’s program in nuclear waste management, the creation of a cutting-edge nuclear education campus, and the development of a career portal for engineering graduates.
The student team ‘Prometheus’, which comprised members from NRU MPEI, IATE NRNU MEPhI, Belgard University, Tsinghua University, and R.E. Alekseev Novosibirsk State Technical University, emerged as the champions of the competition. Their success highlights the collaborative spirit and innovative potential present among the next generation of nuclear technology professionals.
This program not only underscores the growing importance of international cooperation in nuclear education but also showcases the talent and ambition of students from India and beyond. As the world continues to navigate complex energy challenges, initiatives like the Obninsk Tech Winter School play a critical role in shaping the future of nuclear science and technology.
