India Greenlights $2.5 Billion Underwater Tunnel Project in Assam
The Union Cabinet of India has approved a significant infrastructure project valued at ₹18,662 crore ($2.5 billion) to construct a four-lane access-controlled corridor linking Gohpur and Numaligarh in Assam. This ambitious initiative will include India’s first road-cum-rail tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River. The project received clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) and is set to enhance connectivity across vital economic, social, and logistical nodes in the region.
The corridor will span a total length of 33.7 kilometers, with the underwater tunnel measuring approximately 15.79 kilometers. By connecting National Highways NH-15 and NH-715, this infrastructure aims to significantly improve the efficiency of freight movement, reduce logistics costs, and foster socio-economic development in Assam as well as in neighboring states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.
Strategic Economic Impact
The project is designed to connect with 11 economic nodes, three social nodes, two tourist nodes, and eight logistical nodes. It is expected to provide improved connectivity to four major railway stations, two airports, and two inland waterways. This enhancement in transport infrastructure is projected to generate around 80 lakh person-days of direct and indirect employment opportunities, further contributing to the local economy.
Officials anticipate that the corridor will play a strategic role in regional economic development by linking major economic centers and opening new avenues for trade and industrial growth. The approval from the Cabinet comes at a crucial time, as it aligns with upcoming state assembly elections, underscoring its significance in bolstering infrastructure and connectivity in Assam.
The engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) model will be employed for the development of this project, which is expected to set a precedent for future infrastructure endeavors in the country. As India continues to invest in its transport networks, this project represents a major step forward in enhancing connectivity and facilitating economic growth in the northeastern region.
