United Breweries Unveils Project Jal Shakti to Boost Sustainability
United Breweries Limited (UBL), a subsidiary of the HEINEKEN Company, has launched Project Jal Shakti, a comprehensive corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing local ecosystems in Telangana’s Sangareddy district. This project, developed in partnership with BharatCares, seeks to improve groundwater recharge and biodiversity through a series of targeted interventions.
The initiative spans several gram panchayats, including Malkapur, Kothlapur, Guntapalley, Gopulapuram, Haridaspur, and Malepally. Among its key features are two renewable energy-powered Centres of Excellence (CoEs) designed to assist farmers and local communities. These centres will focus on training farmers in sustainable agricultural practices and soil and water conservation techniques, encouraging improved crop productivity.
Innovative Approaches to Agriculture and Water Management
Each CoE is equipped with automatic weather stations that provide real-time data, alongside soil testing laboratories to help farmers make informed decisions about their agricultural practices. The initiative also addresses local water security through the development of a new check dam, the rejuvenation of an existing dam, and the deepening and widening of three irrigation channels.
In an effort to restore the local ecosystem, Project Jal Shakti includes the planting of over 1,200 native saplings. The project’s collaborative approach has garnered support from various stakeholders, with notable attendees at the inaugural event including Geetu Gidwani Verma, Chairperson of UBL’s CSR & ESG Committee, and Bhomik Shah, Trustee of BharatCares.
Community Impact and Future Goals
During the launch, Garima Singh, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at UBL, emphasized the initiative’s focus on sustainable agriculture and water stewardship. She stated, “Project Jal Shakti reflects our long-term efforts towards sustainable agriculture and water stewardship in the communities we operate in. By combining farmer capacity building, water conservation infrastructure, agroforestry, and the Centres of Excellence, we are working towards building resilient livelihoods while restoring local ecosystems.”
Bhomik Shah echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of community involvement in promoting sustainable farming practices and improving water availability. He noted that the CoEs will play a crucial role in fostering long-term resilience among farmers in the region.
United Breweries’ commitment to sustainability through Project Jal Shakti illustrates a proactive approach to addressing environmental challenges while supporting local communities in Telangana. This initiative is set to create lasting benefits for both the agricultural sector and the surrounding ecosystem, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
