Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Land Policy for Third Mumbai Development
The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a new land acquisition and allotment policy aimed at facilitating the development of “Third Mumbai” near the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also known as Atal Setu. This decision, made public on October 24, 2023, is expected to streamline the process of infrastructure and urban development in the region.
During a press briefing following the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that approximately 200 sq km of land has been allocated to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The policy will specifically govern areas that fall under the newly appointed New Town Development Authority and will support future projects initiated by the MMRDA.
Framework for Planned Development
The newly approved policy is designed to create a clear framework for land acquisition and distribution, thereby enabling quicker execution of development projects in the impact zone of the MTHL. According to an official statement, the policy is intended to foster planned development in the region, which is anticipated to accommodate significant urban growth.
The MTHL project itself is expected to enhance connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, significantly reducing travel time and boosting economic activity. The cabinet’s decision aligns with the state government’s broader strategy to enhance urban infrastructure and meet the demands of a growing population.
The approval of this land policy reflects the government’s commitment to facilitating sustainable development in Maharashtra. As urbanization continues to rise, the MMRDA’s role in managing this growth will be critical, and this new policy is set to provide the necessary support for future initiatives.
In summary, the Maharashtra cabinet’s decision to approve the land acquisition policy represents a significant step towards the development of Third Mumbai, with potential benefits for infrastructure and urban planning in the region. The MMRDA is now positioned to advance its projects, ensuring that the area evolves in a structured manner to meet the challenges of modern urban development.
