Arunachal Pradesh Shines as Bharat Rang Mahotsav Celebrates 25 Years

Arunachal Pradesh entered the global cultural arena with the launch of the 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM), a prestigious theatre festival organized by the National School of Drama (NSD). The event commenced on January 30 and will continue until February 2, 2024, transforming Itanagar into a vibrant centre for national and international performing arts.

Festival Highlights and Local Engagement

The festival kicked off at Dorjee Khandu Hall, featuring a spirited performance by traditional Buya folk artists. This opening act not only celebrated local culture but also showcased the festival’s commitment to integrating global theatre with indigenous heritage.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by notable attendees, including Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte and Yachuli MLA Toko Tatung. During his address, Speaker Pongte expressed pride in Itanagar hosting this significant event, calling it “a rare and precious opportunity for the youth and local artists of the state.” He emphasized the unifying power of theatre in fostering cultural connections.

MLA Tatung, reflecting on the societal role of theatre, concluded his remarks with a poetic shaayari, which received enthusiastic applause from the audience. Riken Ngomle, an assistant professor at NSD, highlighted the festival as a creative bridge that connects different regions and cultures. He acknowledged the ongoing support for local artists from both the Speaker and MLA.

Engaging Performances and Future Events

The opening night featured a compelling play titled “Money Money Money Brighter Than Sunshine Sweeter Than Honey,” conceptualized by MLA Tatung. This production delved into themes of income inequality, setting an engaging tone for the festival.

Over the next few days, the festival will move to the Dorjee Khandu State Convention Centre. Upcoming performances include “Sakaljaani He Naath” on January 31, “Tasher Desh” on February 1, and the finale, “Kamrupa,” on February 2.

By hosting its silver jubilee edition in Itanagar, the NSD has reinforced the notion that theatre transcends geographic boundaries, seamlessly connecting regional traditions with a global audience. This festival not only showcases the artistic talents of Arunachal Pradesh but also elevates the state’s cultural profile on the world stage.
