India Announces Development of Buddhist Circuit in Northeast
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman initiated her ninth consecutive Union Budget presentation on February 4, 2024, in the Lok Sabha, marking a historic moment in India’s parliamentary history. The Union Budget for 2026–27 includes significant initiatives aimed at developing the Buddhist circuit across the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, and Tripura. These plans focus on enhancing tourism and cultural heritage in this region by supporting key Buddhist sites and promoting spiritual tourism.
The proposed measures encompass the preservation and development of temples and monasteries, enhancing their attractiveness as pilgrimage and tourist destinations. This effort is expected to bolster local infrastructure, making it easier for both domestic and international tourists to access these culturally rich locations.
A notable figure in this discussion, political analyst and author Anand Ranganathan, has emphasized the need to develop Bodh Gaya as the “Vatican of the East.” This site holds immense spiritual significance as the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, featuring the revered Bodhi Tree and the stunning Mahabodhi Temple complex. With an estimated 535 million Buddhists worldwide, including substantial communities in countries such as Japan, South Korea, and China, the potential for increased pilgrimage and investment in Bodh Gaya is considerable.
Despite its importance, Bodh Gaya has historically received a modest budget for development and maintenance. Currently, only around 250,000 foreign tourists visit the site annually, a starkly low figure given its potential to attract millions more through improved infrastructure and promotion. The need for urgent investment in Buddhist sites is clear, as these initiatives could significantly enhance their global standing as pilgrimage destinations.
As the Indian government outlines its vision for 2026, the focus on the Buddhist circuit highlights a strategic move to not only preserve cultural heritage but also to foster economic growth through tourism. By investing in these initiatives, India aims to elevate its profile on the global stage as a destination for spiritual tourism, while also supporting local economies in the northeastern states.
