President Droupadi Murmu underscored the critical role of women’s empowerment in India’s development during her address on the eve of the 77th Republic Day. Speaking from New Delhi on January 25, 2026, she highlighted several government initiatives aimed at uplifting women and enhancing their participation in various sectors.

In her speech, President Murmu emphasized the importance of women’s active engagement in the country’s growth. She stated, “The active and empowered participation of women is extremely important for the development of the country.” She pointed to national efforts focused on health, education, safety, and economic empowerment, which have collectively increased women’s involvement across various fields.

Key Initiatives for Women’s Empowerment

Among the initiatives mentioned, the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign has been pivotal in promoting female education. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has successfully opened over 57 crore bank accounts, with nearly 56 percent of these accounts held by women. This financial inclusion is a significant step towards empowering women economically.

President Murmu also celebrated the achievements of women in breaking traditional stereotypes, particularly through their contributions in self-help groups. She noted that more than ten crore women are involved in these groups, which are redefining development processes. “Women are making their mark in every field, from agriculture to space, from self-employment to the armed forces,” she stated.

The President highlighted notable accomplishments in sports, including India’s victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup and the participation of two Indian women in the Chess World Cup final. “These examples are a testament to the dominance of India’s daughters in the world of sports,” she remarked, reflecting the pride felt by the nation.

Political Empowerment and Economic Contributions

President Murmu further addressed the political empowerment of women, pointing out that women now constitute nearly 46 percent of representatives in the Panchayati Raj institutions. She introduced the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, legislation aimed at enhancing the political representation of women, which she believes will significantly contribute to the vision of a developed India.

In her address, she also acknowledged the vital role of farmers in the economy, asserting that the central government has prioritized providing fair prices for agricultural produce. President Murmu noted the importance of programmes like PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which honor farmers’ contributions and assist them in avoiding poverty.

“The world’s largest scheme of its kind, the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, aims to ensure that no one goes hungry in our country of over 140 crore people,” she explained, highlighting its impact on nearly 81 crore beneficiaries. This initiative, along with the construction of over 4 crore pucca houses, aims to provide a dignified life for poor families.

Republic Day, celebrated on January 26, marks the adoption of the Constitution of India in 1950, transitioning the nation to a sovereign democratic republic. President Murmu’s address serves as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward a more inclusive society, with women’s empowerment at its core.
