WEF Rejects Calls to Disinvite Trump from Davos Meeting
The World Economic Forum (WEF) has dismissed calls to disinvite US President Donald Trump from its upcoming annual meeting in Davos. In a recent interview, Alois Zwinggi, the WEF’s Managing Director, stated that the notion of barring Trump from participation is not under consideration, emphasizing the forum’s commitment to a neutral platform for dialogue.
In the interview with the Swiss daily newspaper 20 Minuten, Zwinggi responded to concerns raised by Lisa Mazzone, the President of the Green Party of Switzerland. Mazzone urged the WEF to prevent Trump’s attendance, citing the recent US intervention in Venezuela, which has led to significant political upheaval, including the capture of former President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Zwinggi reiterated that the WEF’s mission is to foster discussion on a wide range of global issues rather than focus on specific controversies. He said, “From this standpoint, the question of disinvitation is irrelevant.” The WEF aims to cover various topics, including US tariffs, artificial intelligence, and sustainable prosperity, aligning with its theme of “A Spirit of Dialogue.”
Trump’s upcoming attendance marks his third visit to the WEF, coinciding with plans for a significant US delegation, which will include several Cabinet secretaries. This year’s gathering is set to take place from January 19 to January 23, 2026, and is expected to attract nearly 3,000 leaders from over 130 countries, amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Zwinggi highlighted the importance of including diverse voices in discussions at the forum, stating that such inclusivity is essential for addressing the world’s pressing challenges. He emphasized the significance of dialogue, particularly in a time when global dynamics are shifting rapidly. “People are giving more thought to how they want to build the world of the future. The world has changed since then, and dialogue is absolutely crucial,” he remarked.
The WEF encourages conversations among leaders who might not engage under different circumstances, thereby demonstrating its role as a platform for constructive debate. This ethos is reflected in Trump’s participation, as well as that of other influential figures from G7 and G20 nations, signifying a commitment to addressing complex global issues collaboratively.
As the WEF prepares for its 56th Annual Meeting, the focus will remain on fostering dialogue and exploring solutions to challenges that affect economies and societies worldwide.
