Iranians Express Betrayal as Trump Reverses Support Promises
Protests erupted across Iran as demonstrators expressed feelings of betrayal by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Many protesters voiced frustration after Trump’s recent announcement that the Iranian regime had agreed to halt its violent crackdown on dissent, a statement that left them disillusioned when he later seemed to retract it. This shift has intensified the sense of despair among those seeking reform in the country.
In a January 2, 2020 post on Truth Social, Trump promised support to the Iranian people, stating, “If Iran shots and violently kills peaceful protestors, the United States of America will come to their rescue.” Many Iranians interpreted this as a signal of impending American intervention. The following week, on January 8, 2020, millions took to the streets following calls from opposition figures, including exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi. The Iranian regime responded with force, leading to reports of “thousands dead,” as noted by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
As the violence unfolded, protesters felt a sense of hope that the U.S. would intervene. However, when Trump later indicated he would not pursue military action against Iran, the mood shifted dramatically. An arts teacher in Tehran expressed his disillusionment, stating, “Everyone was just stunned. Everyone was enraged; they just kept saying this bastard used us as cannon fodder.”
The sentiment among protesters was clear: they felt manipulated by Trump’s statements. A businessman in Tehran lamented, “He screwed up. He pulled the rug from under our feet.” Many believe that the U.S. government’s mixed messages have contributed to the violence against demonstrators, with some attributing the deaths of approximately 15,000 individuals to the chaos that followed Trump’s initial promise of support.
Iranians report a palpable increase in state aggression since Trump’s reversal. One woman noted, “It’s already martial law. Now, after Trump went back on his word, they’ve become even more brazen.” She observed security checkpoints scrutinizing citizens’ cellphones, a stark reminder of the regime’s tightening grip.
Despite the prevailing sense of hopelessness, some still cling to the belief that Trump may act decisively in the future. A Tehran resident speculated that the president might be employing a strategy to confuse the Iranian leadership. “If Trump does not attack, how can the regime be toppled?” she asked.
The narrative surrounding Trump’s foreign policy continues to polarize opinions in Iran. While some see him as a potential ally in their struggle against an oppressive regime, others feel betrayed by what they perceive as empty promises. The consequences of these political maneuvers are being felt acutely on the ground, as protesters navigate a climate of violence and repression.
As the situation evolves, the relationship between the U.S. and Iran remains fraught with tension. The Iranian populace, facing increasing danger, grapples with the implications of external political decisions on their fight for freedom.
