Iran’s Foreign Minister Calls Jaishankar Amid Domestic Turmoil
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a crucial phone conversation with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to discuss the escalating situation in Iran. This communication took place amidst widespread anti-government protests and a tightening security response, which have prompted the Indian government to issue a travel advisory for its nationals in the country.
The unrest in Iran has intensified since late February 2024, following a dramatic plunge in the value of the Iranian currency, the rial, which has reached record lows. Initially sparked by economic grievances, the protests have now broadened to encompass calls for political reform. According to reports from PTI, over 2,500 people have reportedly lost their lives due to a severe crackdown by Iranian authorities.
In light of these developments, the Indian government has urged its citizens—students, pilgrims, businesspersons, and tourists—to leave Iran by any available means. The advisory highlights the need for caution and advises against non-essential travel to the region. The Indian embassy in Tehran has also recommended that nationals avoid protest sites and stay connected with the mission for updates on the evolving situation.
Regional Tensions and International Responses
The unrest in Iran has contributed to heightened tensions throughout West Asia. The United States has publicly warned Tehran against violent repression of the protests, with President Donald Trump implying potential military intervention if the situation escalates further. Authorities in Iran have accused the U.S. and Israel of inciting the protests.
Amid these tensions, the U.S. has begun to withdraw select personnel from key military bases in the region, including Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Diplomatic sources have described this as a “posture change” rather than a full evacuation, indicating a precautionary measure rather than a large-scale troop withdrawal. Qatar’s International Media Office confirmed that the personnel reduction was a response to current regional instability, stressing that further developments would be communicated through official channels.
The Iranian government has issued warnings that U.S. military bases could be targeted if Washington intervenes in Iran. A senior Iranian official disclosed to Reuters that regional nations hosting American forces have been alerted to potential retaliatory measures in case of a U.S. strike.
The geopolitical landscape remains uncertain as the situation in Iran continues to unfold. The international community watches closely, with leaders weighing their responses to both the domestic upheaval in Iran and the broader implications for regional stability.
