FBI Thwarts New Year’s Eve Attack Plot in North Carolina

The FBI has successfully disrupted a potential attack planned for New Year’s Eve at a grocery store in North Carolina. An 18-year-old man, identified as Christian Sturdivant, was arrested on December 27, 2023, following allegations that he was inspired by the Islamic State group and had pledged loyalty to the extremist organization.

Sturdivant faces charges of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He was detained after a federal court appearance before US District Judge Susan Rodriguez on December 29, where he was ordered to remain in custody pending further hearings scheduled for January 7, 2024. His attorney has not publicly commented on the case.

The investigation into Sturdivant began last month when authorities received information regarding a social media account linked to him that contained pro-ISIS posts. According to an FBI affidavit, Sturdivant had previously caught the agency’s attention in January 2022, while he was still a minor. At that time, officials discovered he had communicated with an Islamic State member based in Europe and had received disturbing instructions to wear all black and carry out attacks using a hammer.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding the influence of extremist groups on young individuals. The FBI’s proactive measures in this case highlight its commitment to preventing potential threats to public safety.
