‘Ikkis’ Gains Screen Space as ‘Dhurandhar’ Reduces Shows
The Indian cinema landscape is witnessing a strategic shift as the film Dhurandhar reduces its screening slots to accommodate the release of Ikkis, which premiered on January 2, 2024. This adjustment comes as a result of a mutual agreement between the producers of both films, with Ikkis benefiting from the established popularity of Dhurandhar.
Directed by Sriram Raghavan and featuring Agastya Nanda alongside the late Dharmendra in his final role, Ikkis has secured a favorable position in cinemas. According to a report from Bollywood Hungama, Jio Studios—the distributor for both films—has facilitated this arrangement, allowing Ikkis to request a reduction of approximately 30-40% of Dhurandhar’s showings.
As Dhurandhar enters its fifth week, the allocation of screenings for Ikkis is set to be significant, especially in metropolitan areas like Mumbai. A trade expert noted that Ikkis is likely to have more showtimes in the city compared to other films like Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, which, despite its wider appeal as a romantic comedy, could not match the strategic positioning of Ikkis.
Show Allocation and Audience Strategy
The strategy for Ikkis includes specific requests for show allocations that cater to the number of screens available in different cinemas. For venues with two screens, the request stands at four shows; for three-screen cinemas, six shows; and for multiplexes with four screens, eight shows. In larger cinemas with five or more screens, the request exceeds ten shows.
In single-screen and smaller venues, exhibitors have been advised to refrain from scheduling early morning shows. This approach is aimed at maximizing attendance based on anticipated positive word-of-mouth recommendations. Furthermore, theaters have been instructed to price tickets for Ikkis at standard weekend rates, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Despite the limited release in some single-screen theaters, the expectations for Ikkis are optimistic. Its biographical war drama narrative, centered on the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, is anticipated to resonate well with viewers. The film’s strategic show allocation and pricing are expected to enhance its box office performance, setting it apart in a competitive release schedule.
As the film industry adapts to changing viewer preferences, the mutual cooperation between producers and distributors exemplifies a calculated response to maximize audience engagement while navigating the challenges posed by competing releases.
