Nushrratt Bharuccha Faces Backlash After Visiting Mahakaal Temple
Bollywood actress Nushrratt Bharuccha is facing criticism for her recent visit to the Mahakaal Temple in Ujjain, India. The backlash stems from remarks made by Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi, a cleric based in Bareilly, who labeled her worship as haram, or forbidden, under Islamic law. Razvi has gone so far as to issue a fatwa, demanding that Bharuccha repent for her actions and seek forgiveness through the recitation of the Kalma.
In a statement to the media outlet ANI, Razvi expressed his views on the matter, stating, “Visiting places of worship across religions is not inherently objectionable. However, as a Muslim, we cannot indulge in idol worship or participate in the rituals of other religions.” He emphasized that Bharuccha’s participation in Hindu rituals crossed a doctrinal boundary according to his interpretation of Islamic teachings.
This visit marked Bharuccha’s second trip to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, where she participated in the Bhasma Aarti ceremony and received blessings. The actress described her experience as “beautiful and deeply meaningful,” sharing her sentiments on social media with the message “Jai Mahakal.”
As of now, Bharuccha has not publicly addressed Razvi’s fatwa or his calls for her to repent. The cleric’s remarks have ignited a heated debate on social media platforms, with many users condemning his statements as an infringement on personal freedom and an example of “faith policing.” In response to the criticism, Razvi stated that he remains unfazed by the backlash, asserting that his comments were made purely in his capacity as a religious leader. He added, “If Nushrratt is a good Muslim, she will listen.”
Born on May 17, 1985, in Mumbai, Bharuccha began her acting career at the age of 16. She gained significant recognition with her role in the 2010 film LSD: Love Sex Aur Dhokha, directed by Dibakar Banerjee. Over the years, she has established herself as a prominent figure in the industry, known for her performances in films like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Pyaar Ka Punchnama, and Dream Girl.
The situation highlights the ongoing tensions between religious beliefs and personal freedoms in contemporary society. Bharuccha’s visit to a Hindu temple as a Muslim has raised questions about the intersection of faith and individual choice, further fueling discussions around religious tolerance and acceptance.
