Leaders Honor Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Birth Anniversary in Shimla
On July 25, 2023, officials in Shimla paid tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in commemoration of his birth anniversary. During the ceremony at the historic Ridge, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla led the floral tributes, reflecting on Vajpayee’s legacy as a leader who transcended political divides.
Governor Shukla emphasized Vajpayee’s capacity to unite both the ruling party and the opposition, stating that while politics involves competition, it should never devolve into hostility. He characterized Vajpayee’s social and political life as being defined by grace, joy, and dignity. “His conduct should serve as a guiding example for present-day politics,” Shukla remarked, highlighting Vajpayee’s stature as a towering statesman and a true nationalist.
A Personal Connection to Himachal Pradesh
Throughout his remarks, Shukla recalled Vajpayee’s deep connection to Himachal Pradesh, describing the state as his second home. The Governor noted that Vajpayee’s contributions to the nation would always be cherished, particularly his efforts that positively impacted the region.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also paid his respects at the statue of Vajpayee on the Ridge, representing the people of the state. Sukhu described Vajpayee as an extraordinary statesman, a powerful orator, and a gifted poet.
The ceremony also included tributes from Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur and BJP state president Dr Rajeev Bindal. Thakur reflected on Vajpayee’s enduring association with Himachal Pradesh, asserting that Vajpayee always considered the state his home, benefiting the region significantly. He specifically mentioned the industrial package introduced by Vajpayee, which transformed Baddi in Solan district into a major pharmaceutical hub.
The tributes paid to Vajpayee not only celebrated his contributions to Indian politics but also underscored the importance of unity and cooperation in governance. As leaders remembered him, they invoked his legacy as a standard for how politics should be conducted in a democratic society.
