Delhi Schools Shift to Online Classes Amid Severe Pollution Crisis
The Delhi government has mandated a transition to online classes for students up to Class-5 due to alarming air pollution levels in the capital. This decision affects all government, government-aided, and recognized private schools, as outlined in a circular from the Directorate of Education issued on December 13, 2023.
The directive comes in response to the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI), which reached a critical reading of 427 on Monday, placing it in the ‘severe’ category. This escalation follows a record high of 461 on Sunday, marking one of the worst AQI levels recorded for December. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that air quality was categorized as ‘severe’ at 27 monitoring stations across Delhi, while 12 stations fell within the ‘very poor’ range. Wazirpur recorded the most severe air quality at a staggering 475.
In light of these circumstances, all schools have been instructed to conduct classes exclusively online for students from nursery through Class-5. Classes for higher grades will continue in hybrid mode, as previously established.
The AQI classifications indicate varying levels of air quality: an AQI between 0 and 50 is deemed ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’, and any reading above 400 is considered ‘severe’. The drastic shift to online education underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of young students amid deteriorating environmental conditions.
As the situation develops, further updates may clarify the duration of this online learning requirement and any additional measures that may be implemented to address the ongoing pollution crisis in Delhi.
