Putin and Modi Strengthen Ties During High-Profile India Visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin commenced a significant visit to India on the evening of October 5, 2023, which is set to last nearly 27 hours. This visit marks a pivotal moment in the nearly eight-decade-long partnership between India and Russia, especially in light of increasing global tensions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed Putin at Palam Airport with a hug, a rare diplomatic gesture that reflects the depth of their bilateral relationship.

During this visit, Prime Minister Modi is hosting a private dinner for Putin ahead of the 23rd India-Russia Summit scheduled for the following day. The summit is expected to address critical issues, including enhancing defence ties, insulating bilateral trade from Western sanctions, and expanding cooperation in energy security, small modular reactors, fertilisers, and labour mobility.

In addition to the summit discussions, Putin will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan and visit Rajghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. He will also attend summit talks at Hyderabad House, launch a new channel from the Russian state broadcaster in India, and participate in a state banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu before departing later that evening.
