Tripura Governor Celebrates Constitution Day in Agartala
On November 26, 2023, N Indrasena Reddy, the Governor of Tripura, attended a Constitution Day programme at Kendriya Vidyalaya Kunjaban in Agartala. The event underscored the significance of the Constitution as a foundational document for governance and civic responsibility in India.
Emphasizing Discipline and Governance
During his address, Governor Reddy spoke about the essential role of rules and discipline within educational institutions. He remarked, “Just as schools function smoothly by following their rules, a country also runs efficiently when its citizens follow national laws.” This analogy highlighted the importance of adhering to the legal framework established by the Constitution.
The Constitution of India serves as a comprehensive guide, detailing the rights, duties, and principles that govern the nation. Reddy pointed out that every country operates under its own Constitution to ensure order, justice, and democratic governance, making it a vital element in the functioning of society.
The Constitution Day event saw enthusiastic participation from students and teachers, making the observance both informative and inspiring. The gathering reflected a collective commitment to understanding and upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution.
National Celebrations and Presidential Address
India marked the 75th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution with a solemn national ceremony in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The ceremony was presided over by President Droupadi Murmu and attended by key figures including Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Speaker Om Birla, among others.
During her address, President Murmu emphasized the Constitution’s pivotal role in shaping India’s democratic journey. She called upon citizens to uphold its core principles of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. The President also highlighted the importance of the all-inclusive vision embedded in the constitutional ideals, which provides direction to the country’s governance system.
As part of the celebrations, the President released the Constitution in nine languages, including Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Odia, and Assamese. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and understanding of the Constitution among diverse linguistic groups in India.
President Murmu noted that the decision to celebrate November 26 annually as Constitution Day, made in 2015 during the year of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary, has proven significant. She stated that this day serves as a reminder for the nation to reaffirm its respect for the Constitution, which forms the bedrock of Indian democracy.
The Constitution of India was adopted on November 26, 1949, and came into effect on January 26, 1950. This foundational document was the result of extensive debate among members of the Constituent Assembly, establishing India as a “Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic.” Its aim is to secure justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all citizens, making it the longest written Constitution in the world.
By defining the separation of powers and the structure of administration, courts, and legislative bodies, the Constitution underscores the importance of constitutional supremacy in maintaining democracy in India.
