Karnataka Milk Federation Raises Nandini Ghee Price by ₹90

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has increased the price of its Nandini ghee by ₹90 per litre, bringing the retail price to ₹700. This decision, effective immediately, has sparked criticism from consumers already facing high food costs. The hike comes as a surprise, particularly since KMF recently adjusted pricing following changes in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure.

Reasons Behind the Price Increase

KMF officials attribute this price adjustment to rising costs in the global market for ghee and butter oil. Previously, Nandini ghee was priced at ₹610 per litre, which had already seen a reduction from ₹650 due to the implementation of revised GST rates. Officials emphasize that the latest increase is necessary to cover soaring procurement and production expenses.

Consumer reactions to the price hike have been largely negative. Many view the rationale for the increase as inconsistent, particularly since KMF had previously cited GST-related costs as a reason for elevated prices. Activists argue that the cooperative’s shift in justification represents a double standard, especially as many households struggle with rising living costs.

Impact on Consumers

The price revision has occurred at a time when essential commodities, including milk, pulses, and cooking oil, are experiencing steady price increases. This situation poses additional financial strain on families, particularly as they approach the festive season. The new pricing structure for KMF ghee includes various quantities: ₹47 for 50 ml, ₹75 for 100 ml, ₹155–165 for 200 ml, ₹350–360 for 500 ml, and approximately ₹3,525 for five litres.

As consumers voice their concerns, KMF officials have not indicated whether this price increase is a temporary measure or if it will persist in the long term. The community is left questioning the fairness of further financial burdens placed on households in light of global inflation and the previous claims of relief stemming from GST adjustments.
