A woman from Auraiya, a district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, has drawn attention after she eloped with her lover, leaving behind a snake skin on her bed. The incident, which occurred on the night of March 25-26, 2024, initially baffled her family, who discovered the snake skin along with her clothes. They mistakenly concluded that their daughter had undergone a transformation into a serpent, influenced perhaps by popular Indian television dramas featuring characters known as “naagins.”

The 24-year-old woman, identified as Reena, had been planning her escape for approximately three months. She reportedly had shared with her family and neighbours dreams involving snakes, which may have contributed to their bewildering belief in her supposed metamorphosis. As the investigation unfolded, police officials in Auraiya were able to trace Reena’s location through her mobile phone, ultimately leading them to her lover, who had also disappeared that night.

Investigation Reveals Elopement Plan

According to local authorities, Reena is the youngest of six siblings and was facing an arranged marriage that her family had been organizing. Unwilling to accept this arranged union, she devised a plan to elope with her partner, a resident from her village. The couple’s disappearance unfolded in a manner that appeared to be carefully orchestrated, with Reena leaving behind misleading evidence to support the transformation narrative.

In addition to the snake skin, investigators found that Reena had taken with her some personal items, including bangles and rings, as well as an idol of the serpent god, which she had recently acquired from the Sheshnag temple in Mainpuri. These elements added a layer of mystery to her departure, fueling speculation and intrigue within the community.

The case has become a topic of discussion, highlighting not only the lengths to which individuals might go to escape familial obligations but also the influence of media portrayals of supernatural themes on real-life beliefs and actions. As authorities continue their investigation, they aim to gather more information about Reena’s motivations and the circumstances surrounding her elopement.

The unusual nature of this situation has sparked conversations about personal freedom and the pressures of arranged marriages, particularly in India, where such traditions still hold significant sway in many communities. Reena’s story serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding individual choice and societal expectations in contemporary society.
