Trump Claims Progress in Russia-Ukraine Deal During Davos Speech
During the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 22, 2024, US President Donald Trump indicated that both Russia and Ukraine are eager to reach a settlement to end the ongoing conflict. He remarked that negotiations for a deal are “reasonably close,” despite acknowledging significant animosity between the leadership of both nations.
Trump addressed the current situation in Ukraine, noting the hostilities between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He stated, “With that being said, I think Russia wants to make a deal. I think Ukraine wants to make a deal and we’re going to try getting a deal done.” He emphasized that his involvement could help save millions of lives, despite the challenges posed by the “tremendous hatred” between the two leaders.
Trump’s Reflections on NATO and US Involvement
In his remarks, Trump downplayed the role of the United States in the Ukraine conflict, suggesting that it is primarily Europe’s responsibility. He criticized NATO, claiming it treats the US “very unfairly.” Trump reiterated his belief that the war would not have escalated if he had been president at the time, reflecting on the consequences of US involvement.
He questioned the benefits of US efforts to resolve the conflict, stating, “What did we gain other than death, destruction, and massive amounts of cash going to people who don’t appreciate what we do?” Trump emphasized that the United States is geographically distanced from the conflict, with an “ocean separating us,” and underlined that Europe must take the lead in addressing the situation in Ukraine.
Engagement with Zelensky and Future Meetings
Despite the challenging dynamics, Trump expressed confidence in his ongoing discussions with President Zelensky, stating, “I’m dealing with President Zelensky, and I think he wants to make a deal.” His comments came as Zelensky was in Kyiv, with plans for a meeting later that day aimed at furthering negotiations to end the war.
According to CNN, the planned meeting coincides with the travel of Trump’s foreign envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to Moscow for discussions with President Putin. Trump concluded his remarks by expressing optimism about the potential for an agreement, suggesting that if Zelensky and Putin do not come together, “they’re stupid.”
As the conflict continues, the international community watches closely for any developments that may stem from these high-level discussions. The prospect of a settlement remains uncertain, but Trump’s remarks provide a glimpse into the ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding this complex geopolitical issue.
