TMP Leader Appeals for Restoration of Historic Cremation Ground
Senior leader of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), Rajeshwar Debbarma, has formally requested Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to address the deteriorating condition of the royal cremation ground located on the banks of the River Howrah in Agartala. This site holds significant historical value, having served as a cremation ground for the Manikya dynasty, which governed Tripura from the 15th to the 20th century.
In a letter dated November 29, 2023, Debbarma expressed his concerns regarding the upkeep of the cremation ground. He highlighted the site’s importance, particularly as it is the final resting place of many royal family members, including the late Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya DebBarman. His visit to the site on November 27, the anniversary of the Maharaja’s death, left him alarmed by its condition.
Debbarma described the premises as being in a “distressing condition,” with litter and debris scattered throughout the area. He stated, “I was shocked and dismayed to find the premises in a deplorable state.” His observations point to a lack of maintenance that he believes undermines the site’s cultural and historical significance.
Recognizing the royal cremation ground as a heritage site, Debbarma urged the Chief Minister to take necessary actions for its preservation. He emphasized the need to restore the site to its former glory, which he believes could serve to educate future generations about Tripura’s rich history.
“The royal cremation ground is a heritage site of immense importance and should be accorded the status of a protected heritage place,” he added. Debbarma’s appeal aims to inspire action that would not only beautify the site but also honor the legacy of the Manikya dynasty.
This call for restoration reflects a broader concern regarding the maintenance of historical sites in India, particularly those that hold cultural significance. The royal cremation ground in Agartala stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and should be preserved for future generations.
